Access to meaningful text as a student learns to read is important for all learners, including those who are blind or have a visual impairment. As students progress in their knowledge of the Unified English Braille (UEB) code, they can practice their skills reading braille copies of authentic texts, but only if they are available to them. Since the adoption of the UEB code in 2012, fewer and fewer opportunities exist to acquire braille books at little or no cost, resulting in fewer reading opportunities for braille learners in Macomb County. The purpose of this project is to provide more authentic text to braille learners so that they have meaningful access to a variety of texts for Braille reading fluency and comprehension practice.
