During the first half of the semester, my students learn very basic piano and music terminology. Because the class is set up on semesters with mostly non-music students, they learn song composition using loops in GarageBand (and BandLab.com). As they build a song library, they also learn lyric writing. Then, half way through the semester, they are divided into groups (of their choice), and tasked with creating record labels. Each of their individual original songs are combined onto their group's album, and they have an opportunity to sell their music (on CDs & flash drives) at the end of the semester at our band concerts (in the winter and in the spring). During the concert, I preview 30-60 seconds of one song from each of the record label groups.
