Many students find math to be challenging, This year we are striving to build math thinking skills. Daily students are given math brain teasers to analyze and solve in small, cooperative groups. These problems are tackled around the room on vertical whiteboards that build engagement and collaboration. Students make drawings, test out ideas and "think" through real life problems. This is not about finding a cookie cutter answer.... it is about exploring possibilities and explaining their reasoning. Students love being up out of their seats and working with their peers. It is the highlight of their morning. Additionally, students are encouraged to play various math games that build their understand and keep them engaged. This is my first year back in sixth grade and I am hopping to build up my classroom games and manipulatives.
