We use spring scales to show balanced and unbalanced forces using the pulley systems shown in the picture. We have some, but we use them so often that they are reaching the end of their useful life. Digital kinematic analysis with vernier sensors allows students to analyze complex scenarios that take place over the course of less than one second. The speed and drama of the scenarios make learning attractive to students as they can't tell whether acceleration occurred until they analyze the data provided by a vernier sensor. We have some vernier sensors, but we use them almost every class period during both our acceleration and forces unit, and they are reaching the end of their useful life after 8 years of use. This limits student engagement because groups double up when a sensor isn't reliably working properly.
