Little Chefs, Big Skills is a hands-on cooking project designed to give students with autism the opportunity to learn and practice important life, academic, communication, and social skills in a fun and meaningful way. Through preparing simple recipes together, our students will work on following directions, reading recipes, measuring ingredients, counting, sequencing steps, and learning basic kitchen and food-safety skills. Cooking provides a natural and exciting way to bring reading and math skills to life while helping students become more confident and independent. But we're cooking up much more than food! Students will practice listening, taking turns, sharing materials, communicating their needs, cooperating with others, working as a team, staying on task, problem-solving, and being patient while waiting for their turn. The project will also encourage students to explore new foods, textures, smells, and experiences at their own comfort.
