My new, huge classroom opens opportunities for my pedagogy Iâve dreamed of! My vision is for students to sit on the floor with cushions and lap desks to read, work on projects, and develop writing. After a mini lesson at their desks, students could spread out to concentrate or collaborate with partners. So few teachers can say they have unused space in their room, and I want to make use of it all for learning! The benefits of flexible seating are abundant: increase in attention and persistence, sense of community, meeting social emotional needs, increasing collaboration, and nurturing creativity. My pedagogy incorporates things like arts and crafts, performance, and visible thinking to practice reading, writing, and deep thinking. Flexible floor seating would enhance all of my current practices. Students would feel even more at home in my room and eager to dig into all of the interesting learning activities I have planned for them.
