Our Mini-Society Economics Project is a yearlong, hands-on learning experience for our 6th-grade students. Students create their own businesses within classroom "countries," develop products or services, set prices, manage budgets, and use classroom money to purchase supplies. Throughout the year, they learn real-world economic concepts including supply and demand, budgeting, profit, entrepreneurship, pricing, saving, spending, and decision-making. Several times during the year, students operate their own storefronts during Market Day, where our younger students become customers and use their classroom money to make purchasing decisions. This year, our 2nd graders will participate as shoppers, creating an exciting opportunity for older and younger students to interact while applying economics in a meaningful, authentic setting. The grant will help provide the materials and supplies students need to create their products, rewards for them and to run their businesses.
