Restorative practices is a framework practiced in our schools to offer an intentional and respectful approach to addressing behavioral difficulties, prioritize relationship building and community repair. Restorative practice helps us shift discipline from punishment to learning and accountability by helping students: make amends, facilitate communication, helping them understand harm and navigate conflict resolution. Restorative practices helps create a safer and more inclusive, positive learning environment. It is also a framework that helps us teach kids social emotional development, empathy and strengthens our MTSS system. I often see groups of students or classrooms and help navigate conflicts related to friendships, recess, discipline, bullying, trauma and so much more. We sit in a circle and have intentional dialogue with hopes that students can return back to class feeling empowered. The use of circle cushions would be such a positive addition to this work I do!
