Project focus: During the 2023-2024 school year, students read the Great Michigan Read book, Firekeepers Daughter, by award-winning Indigenous Michigan author Angeline Boulley. They engaged in exploration regarding the Indigenous history in Michigan and explored that history in the context of Apple Island in West Bloomfield. Students’ research informed their civic engagement project, which focused on the untold history of Apple Island in our community. Before graduating, seniors developed recommendations regarding how West Bloomfield School District can honor and incorporate these perspectives in updating the stories of Apple Island. However, the work has only begun; students would like to connect with the tribes associated with the island to better understand its history through an Indigenous lens as opposed to a solely European - American one. Students would like to pay for an Indigenous speaker to research the island and visit the school to provide more context for their studies.
