I teach Greek Literature at Brandon High School. My hope is to enhance the curriculum by attending a field trip with all my Greek Literature students to the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA).
At the DIA, I would like to explore ancient art from Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, and the Americas. Under a guided tour, my students would look at ancient art through the lens of G.R.A.P.E.S. (Geography, Religion, Achievements, Politics, Economy, and Social Structure). Students will also be asked to make connections between ideas found in ancient times and the world today, engaging in conversations and hands-on activities that encourage creativity, promote visual literacy, and develop critical-thinking skills.
After our time at the DIA, I would like to take my students to Greek Town to eat lunch. My hope is to provide each student a stipend ($12.50) for lunch so that they can truly enjoy the field trip and fully engage in Greek culture, not just at the museum but through eating as well.
