Helping ELs have a Voice
School: Reuther Middle School
In the EL classroom, many newcomers are afraid to speak in class and are quiet when they do. Because of this, they have a hard time knowing how to articulate different sounds or understanding what others are saying. This has been especially compounded by wearing masks the past few years. The Qball promotes personal interaction and strengthens inclusion by amplifying student voices through a microphone in a durable and fun vessel. Students can interact with one another in an engaging way, helping them with speaking, listening, and social skills. Moreover, this will allow students to better hear and distinguish different sounds from one another and improve their pronunciation. By purchasing a Qball for our classroom, as well as a UVC sterilizer for it, students will be able to fully and actively orally participate in class without worry of any germs. Holding the ball also helps to build speaking confidence. Finally, it allows us to build in supports with discussion starters on the Qball.
