School: Southfield High School for the Arts and Technology
In Foundations of Art, my students learn about color theory, positive and negative space, shapes-organic and geometric, and composition. One of the ways that I teach these Elements and Principles of Art is through the Batik process. It has been a student favorite for several years as the students create the batik and then transform it into a pillow they can display in their homes. Since we are virtual, each student would need their own materials to do this work. These materials include fabric, fabric dye and glue, pillow stuffing, needle and thread. When teaching in the classroom, students would have the opportunity to share the classroom sets of materials, however, this is not possible with our students learning from home. It is my wish that COVID does not restrict my students from having this experience. If awarded the grant, I will purchase what is needed and distribute the materials to work virtually with my students.
