To meet the basic needs of some of our middle schoolers, I am partnering with the counseling office to try to acquire funds to purchase hygiene kits for some of our at risk students. Especially after Covid, and now with inflation, we are seeing more students that need support acquiring basic hygiene tools for self care. In my teacher preparation courses, one of the fundamentals all teachers are taught is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. At the base of this model are human needs that need to be met such as access to food, water, shelter, clothing, and health. If these base needs are not met, humans have difficulty moving on to such as things as relationships, sense of belong, connections, and self esteem, which we want all of our students to experience. The middle school years are already challenging enough, and we are hoping to be able to help students meet some of their basic needs so they can thrive and grow and focus on their schooling, making friends, and feeling confident.
