My SE history class is working on developing an opinion on a public policy and supporting it with historical evidence. Many of my students struggle with writing. I am designing a project that will allow them to express their thinking in a variety of ways, allowing me to reduce the amount of writing required of them while increasing my understanding of their knowledge. The students will have a choice of nine different activities: create a video, record a podcast, design a diorama, create a trifold poster board, paint a picture, create a sculpture, design a newspaper, record a song, create a scrapbook. With each activity, they will also write a 1-3 paragraph essay, as opposed to a five-seven paragraph essay. This combination will support their understanding of the writing process and develop their editing and revising skills. By providing them a variety of options to coordinate with their writing, I will be better able to assess what they truly know and understand about the subject.
