Hands on Social Studies
School: Boulan Park Middle School
I try to be a hands on social studies teacher. I find that students connect with social studies better if they are able to physically connect with the content. Each year I spend a lot of my own money to purchase artifacts, props and equipment that can allow my students to participate in the content instead of just hearing about it. In the last few years I have applied for MSGCU grants which have supplemented this expense. Some of the things that have been purchased include a artifacts from ancient Rome, recreated Spartan armor, fossils, a class set of hiking GPS units and a replica of the President's podium. This year some of the things I am looking to purchase include ancient Sumerian games, virtual reality equipment a 360 camera and potentially funding some of my students projects.
