Each year, I ask my students to a shoe outside of our German classroom on December 6th to celebrate a cultural tradition of St. Nikolaustag. I ask a colleague to put a treat bag in each student's shoe to allow them to experience a more authentic German tradition. I use this opportunity to talk about how German and American cultures and celebrations are different. I usually buy German chocolates, candies and an orange for each student and wrap them in a gift bag and have someone place them in their shoes outside the classroom. I spend about $200 on these chocolates and candies each year because authentic German chocolates and candies are expensive. I would love to have a grant to offset these costs so I can continue to provide this small cultural lesson to my students.
