As a culminating activity to our unit on Natural Resources, the students will promote using timber in a sustainable way. Using this resource in a sustainable way will preserve this resource and the home it provides to many animals, including a variety of birds. With the help of artist and retired art teacher Craig Hinshaw along with Red Oaks Nature Center, the 4th graders will study a variety of birds in Michigan. They will investigate their habitat, diet, song, and migration patterns. The students will then create art that will be shared with the community to bring awareness to the loss of habitat and pollutants that are contributing to the declining numbers of birds across the U.S. Finally, they will join in the debate about changing our state bird to the Kirtland Warbler.
