I teach a group of students ranging from 9th to 12th grade in my classroom. It is a special education classroom, and we go on Community Based Instruction each week. The classroom is self-contained. Students in the class have cognitive impairments and Autism, along with other health impairments. We try to make our outings no cost to families, since the purpose of community based instruction is to build independence and functional life skills in our students. That results in me (the teacher) paying for a lot of the community based instruction pieces for our students. The middle school has a yearly donation from a local business, so they have demonstrated what types of opportunities the funds for CBI would provide for our students. Our goal is to make them as independent and prepared for their life after high school as possible. Any funds to support with these outings would provide such rich experiences for our students!
