This grant project would give my upper elementary program of students with mild cognitive impairments the experience of building their independent living, and overall functional life skills, through the process of cooking on a regular basis. Through this project, we plan to engage in budgeting/grocery shopping skills, planning and following recipes, taking turns and practicing patience, safety/hygiene in the kitchen environment, cleanliness following the cooking experience, positive peer interactions and team building, and feeling joy through the creativity that comes with cooking. This is a group of students who would benefit from the additional opportunity to practice and perform independent skills in the kitchen to help set a strong foundation for their futures! This group is beyond imaginative, joyful, and caring towards others. Their laughs are contagious and I can only imagine how much stronger they'd be while getting the opportunity to cook together!
