Outdoor Pursuits is a new class this year at Walled Lake Northern High School. In this class we develop and strengthen outdoor skills such as: Leave No Trace principles, 10 essentials for hiking, orienteering, geocaching, plant identification, outdoor first aid, shelter building, setting up hammocks/tents, fire building, outdoor cooking, fishing, backpacking, rock climbing, and more! One activity we also include is bicycling. This fall we had a bike mechanic come and teach about bike safety and basic bike maintenance. We rode on the school grounds on our first day of the unit, and then took a field trip to a local cider mill (a 5 mile round trip bike ride) on the second day. We asked that students bring their own bikes, but not every student had one. The PE department had to rent 5 bicycles so that all students could participate. We would love to build our own fleet of bicycles so that we can continue to offer this lifelong activity to students with reduced cost in the future.
