COOKING WITH STUDENTS WITH AUTISM

School: WALLED LAKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Teacher: Kaplan

Share:

For students with Autism, learning how to cook can be incredibly empowering and beneficial for both practical and personal development. Cooking fosters independence by teaching essential life skills, such as meal planning, budgeting, and time management. These skills can enhance self-sufficiency and confidence, as students gain control over their dietary choices and nutritional needs. Students with autism often experience heightened or diminished sensory sensitivities, which can significantly impact their interactions with food. These sensory issues might manifest as aversions to certain textures, tastes, smells, or temperatures, making mealtime a challenging experience. For instance, a student might be overly sensitive to the texture of certain foods, finding them unpalatable or even distressing, while others might be under-responsive, requiring more intense flavors or textures to engage their senses.
