Pre-Writing, Pre-Cutting, and Sensory Motor Supplies for Special Education Pre-School Classrooms
School: Auxilary and Preschool Service Center
As an Occupational Therapist I work with Special Education Pre-school Teachers to help them optimize the fine motor skills of students in their classrooms. Many of the students have developmental delays. These children need special tools (adaptive scissors, special markers/ crayons) that are easier to hold, and materials like clothespins which help to strengthen hand skills needed to perform tasks like pre-writing and pre-cutting. Drawing on easels helps to develop upper body strength/ stability, encourage wrist extension, and a mature pencil grasp. Many students also have sensory concerns and need tools like weighted/ compression vests/ blankets, special seating, and fidgets. The goal of this grant is to provide special supplies/ adaptive equipment to help teachers strengthen the fine motor and sensory motor skill development of their students. These tools will help to prepare these children to successfully participate in pre-school and ultimately kindergarten fine motor tasks.
